New Texas Partnership to Address Stormwater Pollution

8/7/2008 -
Texas is looking to a new public/private partnership to support stormwater pollution prevention efforts.

The Texas Association of Builders, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency all signed the partnership agreement in late July. EPA called the document a first-of-its-kind nationally that commits Texas home builders to work with state and federal governments on stormwater.

“Small changes in the way builders do business can make a big difference when it comes to keeping pollution out of storm water,” said Richard Greene, EPA regional administrator.

Under the agreement, the three partners will work together on a pilot program to educate, inform, and help home builders meet federal and state storm water regulations.

In 2005 and 2007, the three agencies collaborated to provide 1,300 Texas builders with stormwater compliance training programs. Builders that complete the training and a self-assessment checklist display a “Storm Water Self-Certified” sticker on their construction permits. Sites with the sticker will receive a lower priority for routine inspections.
